Dear Fort Lee Families,

How are you doing? I hope that you are healthy and doing what you and your family need to do to get through this.

We are halfway through week #2. I have some good news and bad news. Unfortunately, although I have not received an official notification, I am informing you that the Fort Lee Public Schools will remain closed for next week and most likely the following week as well.  The good news is that last night Governor Murphy and Commissioner of Education Repollet announced that the NJSLA (mandated grade level testing) will be cancelled for this spring. There have already been changes to the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) testing formats. When we return to school, these will not be a concern for students, parents and staff.

The district administration continues to meet virtually with the teachers and each other. This week, grades 5-12 instituted some changes/adjustments to the online instruction process. This is an ongoing, fluid  learning process for all involved and future adjustments will probably need to be made. If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher and/or building principal.

REMINDER:  Practice social distancing. It is proven that it will work to lessen the spread of COVID-19.  Please remind your children that the closures and social distancing measures are in place to protect everyone, and it is vital that everyone adhere to the restrictions issued.

Remember to stay in touch via technology. I spent a good amount of time yesterday, teaching my 85 year old mother how to use zoom. It was definitely worth it. We had a family zoom meeting. I have 5 siblings, 4 who live out of state. We had 10 locations connected. My mom was able to see and speak with all of her children and grandchildren.

Speaking of zoom.com, earlier this week the Board of Education conducted a virtual public meeting by using zoom.com. This enabled the district to take care of business like paying bills. It appears that this will be the process for the upcoming meetings. Information regarding the meetings will be posted on the district website.

My latest suggestion for an activity that can still be utilized: you and your kids can write a letter to someone (grandparents, relatives, friends, etc.) you care about and let them know that you are thinking of them.  Letter writing is a lost art. Try writing the letter with paper and pen. You can still send it electronically by taking a picture, but try something different that may be meaningful to someone. Game recommendation for today: scrabble, boggle or any other word game. My wife’s eyes just rolled back as I returned from the basement with the scrabble board.

Reminder: Sign up for the municipal alerts through the nixle alert notice system at nixle.com or by texting 07024 to 888777.

Don’t forget the census: Fill out the Census online at https://my2020census.gov/  or you can respond by phone at 844-330-2020.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and understanding.  We will get through this,  TOGETHER.
